Mensa of Wisconsin Local Gathering RG - April 26-28, 2019 in Lake Geneva WI
G E M U T L I C H K E I T
(Ge-moot’-li-kite) a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness and good cheer. Dipped in chocolate and wrapped in bacon. Wisconsin style. We’ve moved a few miles down the road to The Ridge, in the beautiful Delavan-Geneva Lakes area. Close enough to roadtrip from Minnesota and Iowa, Illinois and Indiana, for a weekend packed full of fun, friends, and food. April 26-28, 2019. The Ridge will extend the reduced room rate of $99 for king or double rooms to include 4/24 through 4/30. Take this opportunity to explore Southeastern Wisconsin’s playground at pre-season prices. Guaranteed to be punderful.
Start Friday with a choice of field trips. A horticultural selection that keeps on growing which includes several gardens in Delavan containing dozens of tree species. Especially lovely at this time are flowering crab apples at the Paul Lange, Ora Rice and Memorial Arboretums and the Congdon Gardens. Head for Al’s Auto Body and Arboretum. That’s right, if 450 varieties of hostas aren’t enough, on display is a collection of auto-related collectibles. We’ll be allowed to stroll the grounds prior to the annual Hosta Fest. Down the road, Countryside Trees will be open for a stop and chop or shop. Antler dog bones is their sideline specialty. Next door to The Ridge is Pesche’s Market, a family-run business for 50 years. RG attendees receive a 25% discount on twenty greenhouses of gifts, plants, flowers from Asters to Zinnias, and a Fairy Garden. Pick up a bouquet for your room. Set your own agenda as a self-guided tour of these local attractions DELAVAN ARBORETUMS . These are self-guided and free. No need to register. Tour maps & discount coupons will be available at the RG registration table.
We also arranged a special tour of two museums in Burlington (registration required). First the Logic Puzzle museum.
Don’t miss the special, fun, puzzle-solving session at the world’s only hands-on Logic Puzzle Museum for our members. You are challenged to try to solve up to 60 different kinds of brain teasers, logic puzzles & visual puzzles: trying the ones you choose. Even visiting rocket scientists & engineers have been puzzled by puzzles here! Ring bells when you solve puzzles, make a quick take-home puzzle, see the private collection on display and meet the museum founder & puzzle collector.
Begin your weekend chocolate overload at the small but informative and tasty Chocolate Experience Museum. A fee of $12 covers both museums. Tour limited to 25 people and only 8 slots left. LINK TO REGISTRATION FORM Online or Paper Form For more information on tour -> Tour information link
On your way back from Burlington to the hotel, you can swing by Kilwins Confectionary in downtown Lake Geneva to watch and sample hand-paddled fudge, freshly churned ice cream, and hand-dipped chocolates or the Elegant Farmer in East Troy where it’s always the right season for a freshly dipped caramel apple coated with nuts. Decide for yourself if Apple Pie Baked in a Bag is as good as Mom’s. Tours of Nestle’s and Andes factories are no longer offered, but their candies will be featured in our hospitality suites.
The Ridge, formerly Interlaken, midway between Delavan and Geneva Lakes, is situated on Lake Como. Check out their website for amenities, including a new marina, kayak rentals. While the aspen theme was remodeled to appeal to a cosmopolitan crowd, we found the hotel layout was perfect to host an RG with some older peeps as well. Four, count them, Hospitality and Games suites are side-by-side in the middle of a single wing. Our block of guest rooms is the entire 3rd floor! Four elevators. Anyone dismayed at walking great distances will be delighted by the short 100 steps from speaker and dining rooms to the suites and management’s offer to use the entire lobby, Hearth Room and Lounge for individualized games and demos. Outside water sports, fire pit. Inside pool, spa, restaurant, craft beer bar, gym. Something for everyone, even your dog! Yes, inquire ahead and you can bring your pooch along (separate fees apply). You have to call the hotel directly prior to March 31st at 800.225.5558 to guarantee a room on the Mensa party floor. The special rate of $99 is for both king or double queens, 1-4 people. Total room rate with fees and taxes $127.27.

Friday registration begins at 3 with check-in and hospitality suites. We provide dinner, then a trivia contest, games tournaments ongoing and return of Mensa Bowl! Suites are open early and late with hot and cold running food and drinks as always. Wine and cheese tasting. Chocolate class/tasting. You didn’t think you had to learn how to eat chocolate, did you?
Saturday find breakfast and lunch in hospitality suites. A dozen speakers in first floor Alder rooms. Adult beverages and appetizers (some bacon-wrapped) in the suites, caviar sampling prior to dinner. Cash bar for mixed drinks in the Lounge. Assemble in the Alder ballroom for our banquet. Lend an ear to the 2018 O. Henry Pun-Off World Champ, home-groan Toby Miceli-Gwiazdowski, with a rapid-fire witty, winning punslinging performance. Then pit your skills against Toby and step up for team Pun Combat! Just when you thought you couldn’t groan anymore, retire to the suites which will be brimming with desserts. Find out for yourself if it’s possible to have too much chocolate. There will even be bacon/chocolate combo desserts. And more games.
For recovering chocoholics and pun survivors, Sunday opens with a hot buffet breakfast (more bacon) in Hospitality and two speakers. Choose from a selection of over 100 molds to make your own chocolates to take home. And a new resort affords a new venue for a scavenger hunt. Games will continue well into the afternoon.
